2023 Volkswagen Atlas & Atlas Cross Sport

What to Know About the 2023 Volkswagen Atlas & Atlas Cross Sport

The Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport are two midsize SUVs from Volkswagen that can dominate the road or the trail. The Volkswagen Atlas is a three-row model that can accommodate up to seven passengers, while the Atlas Cross Sport removes the third row and increases the ground clearance for better off-road travel. These crossovers can meet any driver's needs, so if you want to learn more about these models, continue reading or shop at Volkswagen of Old Saybrook today.

2023 Volkswagen Atlas

For the 2023 model year, Volkswagen removed one of its trims and made several minor equipment changes. Gone is the S trim from the lineup, making the SE trim the base model. Volkswagen has also added its 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro instrument cluster as standard equipment for all trims above SE.

Performance

The Atlas comes equipped with one of two engines, a 235-hp four-cylinder or a 276-hp V-6. Both models are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and come with either front- or all-wheel drive. The ride quality is smooth, and its engines can tow quite a bit of weight. With the V-6, the towing capacity is 5,000 pounds, but for the four-cylinder, it's only 2,000 pounds.

While the Atlas's fuel economy isn't groundbreaking for its class, it is better than average. The four-cylinder model is the most efficient with the front-wheel drive, as it gets an estimated 21/25 miles per gallon. With a front-wheel drive V-6, the fuel economy dips to 18/24 miles per gallon.

Technology & Safety

No matter which Atlas trim you choose, you'll be treated to plenty of great tech. The touchscreen interface is intuitive and very responsive. And standard features include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, a six-speaker sound system, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and two USB ports.

To keep you safe on the journeys you take, the Atlas comes with a bevy of standard and optional driver-assistance technology. Forward collision mitigation and a blind-spot monitor are standard, while higher trims see adaptive cruise control and a 360-degree camera installed.

2023 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport

Volkswagen has removed the base S trim from its lineup this year, allowing the better-equipped SE with an eight-inch digital gauge to take its place. The midrange SEL will come standard with all-wheel drive and 20-inch wheels, while a new SEL R-Line Black trim includes blacked-out exterior trim and black-painted wheels. And drivers who purchase the Technology package and the optional V-6 engine together will now receive a trailer hitch receiver.

Performance

There are two engine options for the Atlas Cross Sport. The base powertrain is a turbocharged 235-hp four-cylinder, and the other is an optional 3.6-liter 276-hp V-6. Both engines are offered with either a front- or all-wheel drive. In terms of fuel economy, the four-cylinder is the most efficient. When equipped with a front-wheel drive, this model gets 21/25 miles per gallon, though that number dips to 20/24 miles per gallon with all-wheel drive. With the V-6 engine, the fuel economy drops to 18/24 miles per gallon, though this number stays constant with front- or all-wheel drive.

Technology & Safety

Though the Atlas Cross Sport has an updated steering wheel and stitched door panels, the interior will be quite familiar to anyone who's sat inside the Volkswagen Atlas. All Atlas Cross Sports come with a touchscreen display providing both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. And a reconfigurable digital gauge display is also standard across the lineup. Navigation is optional, as is SiriusXM satellite radio and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot.

No matter where you go, be it on or off-road, the Atlas Cross Sport will keep you safe. All Atlas Cross Sports come with automated emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring. But if you want more advanced driver-assistance features, like land keeping assist or a surround-view camera, you'll have to go with one of the higher trims.
